Baška Glagolitic Path

GLAGOLITIC SCULPTURES LOCATIONS

The island of Krk is not just the place where the Baška Tablet (the first national document in Croatian history, dated around the middle of 11th century and written in Glagolitic script) was found. This is where the Glagolitic alphabet was in use for centuries in the past, leaving a strong mark in local and national culture. The Baška Glagolitic Path is dedicated to the Glagolitic script and it leads visitors to historical and cultural points of interest and landmarks.

The Path forms a nonlinear trail marked by stone sculptures, starting from the mountain pass of Treskavac, at the entrance to the Baška valley, and ending by the waterfront, in Baška’s harbour Stara Riva (Old Pier). Along the Path there are 34 stone statues displaying the individual letters of the Glagolitic alphabet.

Four large sculptures were created by the academic sculptor Ljubo De Karina and the remaining 30 smaller statues were created in art workshops in Baška. These workshops were led and mentored by Mr. De Karina, who was also the artistic supervisor of the whole project. The original idea and implementation of this project was led by the Sinjali Society of Baška, a society for the promotion of culture, tradition and ecology.

THE BAŠKA TABLET

The Baška Tablet is the oldest known document in which the Croatian name is written in Croatian language and in Croatian Glagolitic script. It is a stone tablet with 402 characters and 107 words carved in 13 lines of text. The inscription is about the donation of a piece of land to the Abbey of St. Lucia from King Zvonimir of Croatia. The Baška Tablet is depicted on the national banknote of 100 Croatian Kuna (HRK).
